Backyard Campout Day!

I don’t know about you… but this weekend I am totally taking advantage of Michigan’s beautiful outdoors. How befitting too, when THIS Saturday is Great American Backyard Campout Day!!!

I have so many awesome (classic) and some not so classic ideas of how to celebrate with my lil one. I do have to say though… anything outside and bonfire related; I am in! It is so important to persuade your kids to unplug and spend some time outside and moving their bodies and using their imaginations. Here are a small list of things I plan on doing this weekend with my lil one and friends.

  1. Making S’Mores ~  Ok who doesn’t love the idea of devouring this classic ooey-gooey deliciousness?  Cool thing is… you don’t have to have open flames to enjoy this yummy treat. A paper plate, 2 graham crackers, a marshmallow,  a small hunk of chocolate, and a microwave are all you need. If you are a kid you may need the assistance of a grown-up because it could get too hot for little fingers. Just lay one of the graham crackers on the plate and put the chocolate and marshmallow on top of each other. Add the 2nd graham cracker: pop it in the micro for about 10-15 seconds…. Voila! Indoor/Outdoor Camping deliciousness
  2. Playing Flash Light Tag ~ I can remember as a kid the cousins and I chasing each other around my grandmother’s back yard with flashlights. Especially after our crazy (but fun) family reunions. Good Times! We didn’t call it exercise then… we were just kids playing and enjoying the summer.
  3. Having a Scavenger Hunt ~ Hide some fun objects around the backyard and have your kids help seek them out. They can be goodies or toys to play with outside while camping. Who doesn’t like a lil competition? Whomever finds the most hidden stuff WINS!!!
  4. Rock Hunting ~ We used to skip rocks out at the lake and bring home ones that looked different, pretty or just interesting. Michigan is home to Petoskey stones. They are unique because they are composed of fossilized coral that lived in Michigan’s waters thousands of years ago.
  5. Going Hiking, Biking, Boating, Fishing, Walking, Swimming, or Running! Anywhere and Anytime is perfect to get out and make memories with your family and friends.

Whatever you end up doing this weekend… Do it with love and kindness. OH, and eat a S’More for me!

ENJOY!!!

Humbly We Give

1796739_10203027108985137_2212911556041398228_o

We have. Therefore we give!

One of the greatest things that I have come to appreciate while working for The Super Hero Factory (and am so grateful for) is that we give so much back to our local community, to children and non-profit organizations all over the USA.

One of the many ways the company fosters this mantra, is donating a superhero cape to a child for every order on our website over $50. Not only does this help non-profit organizations and sick children, but it also qualifies your order for free shipping. ( :

With so many awesome Made in the USA products, it’s hard not to spend more than $50.

If you know of a child in need of a super hero pick me up, please fill out this form. You may also use this to donate a cape to a child.

  • “It’s not just a business… but a loving group of good people with open hero hearts who create fun, high quality and safe products for children. We love getting capes and super hero goodies for our grandkids!” ~ Daniel and Janice Wilson

We give because we care.

Summer Bored-itis?

bored_3

Now that summer is finally here, there is an ever-dreaded phrase that our kids will utter at least 30 times before school starts in the fall… “I’m Bored!”

Even the best of us at The Super Hero Factory have succumbed to letting our kids watch a bit too much TV, allowing hours to be spent plugging into computers, playing video games, and ignoring the world. However, there are so many opportunities to grow and enrich our lives!

We Say, “Couch Taters No More!”

Here are a few ideas that we’ve come up with to help stave off and cure the summer time “I’m Bored-itis”

Set Fitness Goals as a Family – Who doesn’t love a little competition? How many times can you hula hoop? Can you beat me at doing the most push ups? Try to make getting outside and active fun and exciting. Bike rides, swimming; even just an impromptu water fight in the backyard with the hose can create memories and promote physical activity.

Volunteer – Pick a charity to team up with and promote their mission. Whether it is helping to feed the homeless or picking up trash at a public park, getting involved in your community is a win-win.

Brainstorm Together – Get conversations flowing with possibilities of what your kids may want to do this summer.

Encourage Play dates – Play dates provide ways for kids to build social skills but also for you to touch base with other parents as well. You can suggest games for play dates. Such as a candy hunt, a scavenger hunt, race car races or playing Sardines (which is the reverse of Hide and Seek).

Arts & Crafts – Creating physical things with our hands make our brains burst and light up with imagination. Summers spent at my grandma’s were amazing. We collected rocks during our walks after lunch. We would paint them all different colors. Some ended up looking like animals and some just a painted mess. However, very memorable fun!

No matter what you happen to choose for activities this summer, the objective is to put the electronics down, get conversations flowing and let imagination take over. Keep it Fun. Keep it Simple. Just do it TOGETHER!

Enjoy!
